There are essentially five types of data in corporations. "Master data" fall into four groupings - people, things, places, and concepts.

Unstructured data in e-mail etc. Transactional data like sales, deliveries etc. Metadata in database structures etc. Hierarchical data represents the relationships between other data. Data management follows the cycle of CRUD - Create, Read, Update & Destroy along with Search. MDM program involves identification of sources of master data, producers and consumers, collect and analyze metadata, appoint data stewards, implement a data-governance program, develop the model, choose a toolset, design, generate, test & deploy. It includes decisions like what the master records look like: what attributes are included, what size and datatype they are, what values are allowed, mapping between the data model and the data sources.
